Confusion Regards First Job...

Sunil: Hi Vikash Sir, I have completed my BTech in Mechanical Engineering in 2009. I always wanted to get a job in core mechanical engineering stream. I am getting a job in a core company but in sales and service stream. The company has offered a good salary package. There is a contract of two years.

I am confused what to do. Should, I join the job or not? Will it spoil my profile? What would be the career prospects? Please help me I need you advise.

Vikash: Hi Sunil, Thanks for getting in touch. I think you should accept the offer and join the job. These days market is not in a very good condition. Getting a job that too in a good reputed company and with a good salary package is a real challenge.

In your case:

  • You are getting a job in a good company.
  • Salary package is good.
  • Job nature is not completely out of the core stream.
  • Overall this will be your first job.

You can easily explore job in core area when you switch over the job. You’ll have some good points to explain the present job nature and expected job nature.

You can easily explain that:

  • The time when you joined the job, the job market was very low.
  • Since you were fresher you did not had much options and you were getting an offer in a good company and that to with a good package.
  • Since the job had a contract for 2 years, you couldn’t change the job and more over there was a sense of job security.

Only thing you need to do during these two years is that you don’t loose you focus and keep you skills brushed up, so that you can get in to a core job easily.

I guess your confusion is over now. Enjoy your new job.
